A group of seven accused individuals of German left-wing extremist organization stand trial over series of violent incidents

Seven individuals accused of being the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network went on trial on this week, facing charges for attacks targeting far-right activists that earned them the nickname “the hammer group”.

Global terror listing and legal charges

Recently, the United States designated the organization as a terrorist organization together with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany state the network was responsible for attacks on sites in the country and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

The trial involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for violent incidents in Budapest during early 2023, around an annual event known as the “day of honor” that attracts far-right participants from across Europe.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T, is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted assault against far-right activists in the lead-up to the same rally in 2023.

Regional context and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has long been a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, responsible for organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M, he is accused of organizing training sessions where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. At depots managed by Paul M, the network allegedly accumulated hammers, pepper spray, concealment items and communication devices.

Previous convictions and global responses

Another militant formerly involved with the organization, Lina E, emerged as a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation makes group members ineligible to enter the US, freezes any assets they may have within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing AfD party welcomed the US decision and called on the government in Berlin to take similar action. However, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The danger posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have either already been convicted or remain detained.”
